Beschrijving van de verkoper

Juvenal & Persius – Satyrae / Satirarum Liber – Petrus van der Aa – Leiden, 1695 – 13 engravings

Impressive late 17th-century scholarly edition of the satires of Decimus Junius Juvenalis (Juvenal) and Aulus Persius Flaccus, published in Leiden by the renowned Dutch publisher and bookseller Petrus van der Aa in 1695.

D. Junii Juvenalis Aquinatis – Satyrae, extensively annotated with the ancient scholia and the commentaries of numerous important humanist scholars, including Grangaeus, Britannicus, Rigault, Pithou, Pulmannus, Vossius, Scaliger, Heinsius, Gronovius and Graevius.

Bound together with:

Auli Persii Flacci – Satirarum Liber, with the celebrated commentary of Isaac Casaubon, revised and enlarged by Meric Casaubon.

A substantial and richly produced classical edition, with attractive typography and title pages printed in red and black.

Illustrations

The volume contains 13 engraved leaves in total:

- engraved allegorical title/frontispiece;
- fine full-page engraved portrait of Persius after an antique bust;
- 11 full-page engraved plates accompanying the texts of Juvenal and Persius.

The plates illustrate classical sculptures, reliefs, coins, costumes, figures and other antiquities referred to in the commentaries.

The complete series of 11 plates, engraved title and portrait is present.

Juvenal comprises 980 numbered pages, followed by an extensive index. Persius has its own separately printed red-and-black title page and pagination.

Of additional interest are several early handwritten scholarly marginal annotations, evidence of the volume's historical use by a learned reader.

Condition

The text block and contents are remarkably well preserved considering the age of the volume. The paper is generally clean and strong, with attractive wide margins, and the engravings are crisp and well printed. Some occasional spotting, staining and other normal traces of age and use are present.

The contemporary leather binding, however, is in poor and unrestored condition. The spine is heavily worn and defective, with considerable loss of leather; the boards, joints and binding structure show substantial wear and damage.

Please study the photographs carefully, particularly those showing the binding.

Despite the distressed binding, the contents remain highly attractive: a complete, richly illustrated copy of this important Leiden edition of Juvenal and Persius, published by Petrus van der Aa in 1695, with all 13 engraved leaves present. In total 980+ 213 pp. + indexes.
