Copycat26 - Pokémon Film Archive

This lot presents five unique spray can artworks from the new Pokémon Film Archive project by COPYCAT26.

For this project, COPYCAT26 transforms used graffiti spray cans into three-dimensional carriers of popular visual culture. Each can has been individually treated with a carefully selected reproduction of historic and nostalgic Pokémon film imagery, creating a striking combination of street-art aesthetics, collectible culture and mass-media imagery.

The Pokémon imagery is deliberately presented as a reproduction rather than as an original film poster. By transferring these familiar images onto used spray cans, COPYCAT26 removes them from their original context and gives them a new physical and artistic identity.

The five cans feature different Pokémon film-related imagery and are individually distinctive. The combination of the original wear, traces of paint and the colourful spray caps with the highly recognisable Pokémon imagery creates a contrast between the raw language of graffiti and the polished world of commercial pop culture.

The works form part of the broader artistic practice of COPYCAT26, which explores repetition, reproduction, existing imagery and the transformation of everyday objects into contemporary art. While the earlier COPYCAT26 works focus on art-historical imagery, Pokémon Film Archive represents a new and separate project centred on popular culture and the visual history of Pokémon.

Each spray can is therefore both an individual object and part of a larger visual archive.
