Oil on board. A fine example of the work of Bartus Korteling (1853–1930), a respected Dutch painter and drawing teacher from Deventer, known particularly for his landscapes and depictions of the Dutch countryside. Korteling was an influential teacher and mentor to the young Han van Meegeren (1889–1947), introducing him to the techniques and aesthetic of the Dutch Golden Age, including the work of Johannes Vermeer.

This atmospheric rural scene, with its broad green meadow, farm buildings, cattle and expressive handling of light, reflects Korteling’s traditional Dutch landscape style. His artistic influence on Van Meegeren was formative and adds particular historical interest to works by Korteling.
