Beschrijving van de verkoper

Jakob Basnage – Vervolg op Flavius Josephus; of Algemeene Historie der Joodsche Naatsie – 1726/1727
COMPLETE COPY – 2 PARTS – 90 COPPER ENGRAVINGS – 5 FULL-PAGE ENGRAVINGS – 4 TABLES, INCLUDING A FOLDING TABLE
Jakob Basnage,
Vervolg op Flavius Josephus; of Algemeene Historie der Joodsche Naatsie, van de dood van Herodes den Groten af, tot den ondergang der Joden...
Amsterdam, Gerard Onder de Linden, and Delft, Reinier Boitet, 1726–1727.
Two parts, folio.
An impressive and richly illustrated Dutch edition of Basnage's continuation of the history of the Jewish people after Flavius Josephus.
The copy has been carefully checked and is complete. Both parts and their title pages are present, and the second part concludes correctly on page 1940 with “EINDE.”
The seemingly irregular pagination, including several large jumps in page numbering, is characteristic of this edition and does not represent missing text.
The illustration programme is also complete, comprising:
90 copper engravings within the text
5 full-page engraved plates/portraits
4 typographical tables, including one folding
Engraved portraits
Engraved dedication to Egidius van den Bempden
The remarkable Kabbalistic/Sephiroth plate and tables
The latter are particularly fascinating: the work contains elaborate representations and tables concerning the Ten Sephiroth, the names of God, angelic orders, planets and Kabbalistic correspondences, making this much more than a conventional historical work.
Numerous further copper engravings illustrate biblical and Jewish history, ceremonies, historical events, architecture, figures and scenes throughout the two volumes.
Collation/completeness:
Both parts complete. All 90 text engravings, 5 full-page engravings and 4 tables are present. No evidence of removed plates or leaves was found.
The book shows the normal signs of age and use expected in a large early-18th-century folio. Please examine the photographs carefully for the condition of the binding, paper, occasional staining, browning, foxing and other age-related traces.
A particularly attractive feature of this copy is that the extensive illustrative material has survived complete, including the easily lost separate plates and tables.
A substantial and complete illustrated Dutch-Jewish historical work, Amsterdam/Delft, 1726–1727.
