Zeskantig inro 印籠 (gelaagde houder voor zegels en medicatie) - Lak, Verguld - Japan - 19e eeuw (Laat Edo-periode/Vroeg Meiji-periode)
An exquisite five-case gold lacquer inrô 印籠 (tiered case for seals and medicine) of unusual hexagonal form. The tall, upright inrô presenting a continuous landscape featuring a majestic peacock 魚 (kujaku) perched atop a craggy rock, its elaborate tail feathers sweeping gracefully along the reverse. At the reverse, a peahen strides past the porous stone, surrounded by blooming peonies 牡丹 (botan) and clusters of foliage.
Executed in a refined combination of hiramaki-e 平蒔絵 (low-relief lacquer), takamaki-e 高蒔絵 (high-relief lacquer), and kirigane 切金 (cut gold foil) in different shades of gold with some polychrome accents, on a gold lacquer ground. The compartments are finished in lustrous reddish gold nashiji 梨子地 (gold-speckled lacquer).
Signed on the underside by the artist ‘Made by Tamagawa’ 玉川作 (Tamagawa saku).
Fitted with an ovoid ojime of glistening red polymer.
