Japanse Zushi 厨子 met Nepalese Padmapani - Brons, Hout, Koper, Lak - Japan - Edo Periode (1600-1868)

A lacquered wooden zushi 厨子 (portable shrine) housing a heavy gilt-bronze inlaid figure of Padmapani, the lotus bearer, with refined detailing. The zushi, crafted in Japan during the Edo period (1615–1868), is of traditional form finished in glossy black rôiro 蝋色 lacquer with hinged double doors and elaborate copper fittings finely incised with swirling floral motifs. The interior is decorated in soft fundame 粉溜地 (matte gold lacquer), while the reverses of the doors are painted with two attendant deities standing on swirling clouds. The domed top curves gently at the edges and is carved with a small bird in relief. The figure, of Nepalese origin and cast in the 20th century in Thakuri style, depicts Padmapani (the lotus-bearing manifestation of Avalokiteśvara) standing firmly on the tiered base within the shrine. His right hand is held in varada mudrā (gesture of compassion), with a delicately engraved chakra symbol on the palm, while his left hand forms kataka mudrā, supporting a lotus stem rising to his shoulder. He wears a finely incised foliate-patterned loincloth secured by a belt, with the folds naturally draped between the legs. A sacred thread runs diagonally across the torso, and the figure is richly adorned with beaded and floral jewellery inlaid with turquoise and coral. Atop his head rests an elaborate three-leaf tiara centred by a seated image of Amitābha Buddha. Period: Zushi – Japan, Edo period (1615–1868); Figure – Nepal, 20th century Dimensions: Zushi Height 50.5 cm, Width 25 cm, Depth 20 cm.; Figure Height 37.5 cm. Weight: 1,864 g (zushi); 4,400 g (figure) Overall good condition, the figure in a very good condition with typical wear and casting irregularities as well as some typical losses to the inlays, the zushi shrine with extensive wear, including flaking to the lacquer, losses to the top, expected cracks, some chips as well as remnants of pigments. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
