De pulwar of pulouar (پلوار) is een éénhandig gebogen zwaard. - IJzer (gegoten/gesmeed), Hout, Leder - Afghanistan - 19e eeuw

The pulwar or pulouar (پلوار) is a single-handed curved sword originating in Afghanistan, possibly early 19th Century. Here we have from my personal collection a Afghani Pulwar with its sheath. Iron hilt with knuckle-bow. Very interesting single-edged blade with a double thin blood groove on both sides and embellishments, blade back decorated with silver ornaments gold/silver work. Hilt knob with gold inserts. Sheath wood coated with leather, the seam closed, made of iron. Interesting piece, all still in a good condition. The sword does have a slight buckle in the middle possible from past usage yet still a solid sword. The pulwar originated alongside other scimitar-type weapons such as the Arab saif, the Persian shamshir, the Turkish kilij, and the Indian talwar, all of them ultimately based on earlier Central Asian swords.[1] Originally, the Khyber Knife (a type of short sword) served as the weapon of the common people while upper-classes could afford to import swords from neighbouring Persia and India. Over time, the Afghans combined characteristics of the imported swords and adapted it to create the pulwar. Most existing pulwars date back to the early 19th century. Please refer to photos for further details. Approximately Total length: 36 Inches, without sheath. Approximately 31 Inches blade length and blade approximately width: 3.8cm.
