Elegant Ndimu lichaamsmasker - Ndimu - Makondé - Tanzania

Makonde Ndimu Body Mask. Mozambique / Tanzania. The Makonde people of northern Mozambique and southeastern Tanzania used female body masks as a significant element in their initiation ceremonies. Both boys and girls participated in these rites, which included a period of seclusion lasting about six months. During this time, they were taught traditional songs and dances, learned practical skills, and received instruction on adult responsibilities and gender roles. The initiation process involved male circumcision and imparting knowledge about gender-related mysteries. The initiates were educated on societal norms, proper adult behavior, and the expectations and duties of married life, including sexual relations. Festive ceremonies marked the end of the seclusion period, featuring performances by masked dancers known as midumu, or ndimu in singular. One notable mask type, used in these ceremonies, was the amwalindembo, symbolizing a young pregnant woman. This extraordinary mask depicted a female figure with full breasts and a swollen abdomen, intricately adorned with Makonde-style scarification patterns. Such masks were always worn by male performers, paired with another mask representing a female. The amwalindembo danced with measured grace, often alongside a male ndimu mask, acting out the pains and experiences of childbirth. With its rounded form reflecting pregnancy, this mask was a powerful symbol of fertility and femininity. Provenance: Jo Christiaens private collection, Bruges, Belgium Object type: ndimu body mask Tribe: Makonde Material: wood Height: 53 cm Stand: yes The condition and potential fragments or signs of wear are documented in detail through presented photographs. Shipment is included following further defined rates. Other delivery or pickup methods can be organised accordingly.
