Kakejiku 掛軸 (hanging scroll) - Fan-Shaped Classical Poem Calligraphy - Papier - 三国幽眠 Mikuni Yūmin (1810–1896) - Japan - Edo-periode (1830) - Meiji-periode (1912)

Item Description: This is a hanging scroll (kakejiku) featuring a fan-shaped calligraphy inscription by the esteemed Confucian scholar and calligrapher Mikuni Yūmin (三国幽眠, 1810–1896). Rendered in classical Chinese poetry form (qijue shi, 七絶詩), the work expresses poetic imagery evoking a tranquil summer landscape, with references to willows, lotus flowers, and the reflections on a calm river. The fan format enhances the lyrical nature of the piece and reflects traditional literati aesthetics. The calligraphy is dynamic yet refined, embodying the scholarly and artistic ideals of the late Edo and Meiji periods. The mounting shows signs of age and wear, with some insect damage at the top, but the central artwork remains well-preserved. The scroll is housed in its original wooden storage box, bearing inscriptions and documentation, including period paperwork and references to its authenticity. Size: Height: 120 cm Width: 62 cm Artist Profile: Mikuni Yūmin (三国幽眠, 1810–1896) was a prominent Confucian scholar and calligrapher active from the late Edo to the Meiji period. He participated in the sonjō (Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians) movement alongside figures like Yanagawa Seigan. After being exiled during the Ansei Purge, he later became a government lecturer under the Meiji administration. Yūmin's calligraphy is characterized by its fusion of Confucian discipline and expressive brushwork. He used the courtesy name Shijō (士縄) and art names Takano (鷹巣) and Rokuroku Sanjin (碌々山人).
