He participated in the sonjō (Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians) movement alongside figures like Yanagawa Seigan. After being exiled during the Ansei Purge, he later became a government lecturer under the Meiji administration. Yūmin's calligraphy is characterized by its fusion of Confucian discipline and expressive brushwork. He used the courtesy name Shijō (士縄) and art names Takano (鷹巣) and Rokuroku Sanjin (碌々山人).
