France & Son - Finn Juhl - Lounge stoel - Bwana - Teak

Finn Juhl for France & Son, 'Bwana' lounge chair, in teak and green-greyish fabric, Denmark, 1962 design, 1960s production. This is an excellent, solid teak version of Finn Juhl's 'Bwana' chair. Designed in 1962 by Finn Juhl for France & Son, the “Bwana” chair was originally conceived as a modern reinterpretation of the iconic “Chieftain” chair. Today, both designs are regarded as masterpieces of equal stature. The Bwana showcases superb craftsmanship in wood detailing and joinery, hallmarks of Juhl’s work. Notable features include the carved teak frame, the triangular teak section at the headrest supporting the top of the back, and the solid circular "pommel" hand-rests – all characteristic details of this design. This chair has been newly reupholstered in a refined mint green fabric, bringing a fresh, contemporary character while preserving the timeless elegance of Juhl’s vision. Like many of his designs, the Bwana reflects influences of traditional African art as well as European modernist sculpture. Finn Juhl (1912–1989), born in Denmark, first intended to become an art historian before pursuing architecture at the insistence of his father. After earning his degree, Juhl worked for ten years with Vilhelm Lauritzen before opening his own furniture design practice at age 33. In the 1940s, Juhl created a series of groundbreaking designs that transformed Danish furniture and broke away from established tradition. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Danish Modern, he became the first Danish furniture designer to gain international recognition. His work is celebrated for its elegance, refinement, and meticulous execution, qualities that helped establish the global reputation of Danish design. Literature: Finn Juhl: Memorial Exhibition, Hansen et al., pp. 88–89, 145.
