About Chartreuse ------------------ In 1605, Maréchal de Estrées donated to the Carthusian monks a manuscript with the recipe, based on 130 plants, for a supposed long-life elixir. The paper was divided into three parts that are kept by three monks separately in the monastery of Le Grande Chartreuse in Grenoble (France) to guard against imitations. The Tarragona distillery, now abandoned, produced it from 1904 to 1989. Thanks to the climate and the proximity of the sea, its aging in oak barrels gained unique properties.
