Byōdō-in (平等院) - Ido Masao 井堂雅夫 (1945-2016) - Japan (Zonder Minimumprijs)

Item Description: This beautiful woodblock print by Masao Ido (井堂雅夫) is part of the renowned "Kyoto Hyakkei" (One Hundred Views of Kyoto) series, specifically from the "Ten Views of Kyoto Prefecture" subset. The artwork depicts the iconic Byōdō-in Temple under a glowing full moon, emphasizing the tranquil atmosphere and refined architectural elegance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The contrast between the luminous sky and the intricate details of the temple rooftops is masterfully rendered, showcasing Ido’s refined technique and deep appreciation for traditional Kyoto scenery. This piece is a striking example of contemporary shin-hanga, blending modern aesthetics with classic Japanese woodblock traditions. Artist's Comment: Byōdō-in Temple Originally built as the Uji Palace, a villa for Fujiwara no Michinaga during the mid-Heian period, it was later inherited by his son, the regent Yorimichi. In the seventh year of Eicho (1107), it became the Buddhist temple Byōdō-in. The Phoenix Hall is famous nationwide and attracts many visitors. Rather than depicting the entire Phoenix Hall, I wanted to capture the phoenix illuminated by the moonlight at dusk. This work was created based on a sketch. The beauty of the contrast between moonlight and the phoenix... My thoughts drifted back to the Heian period. It was a quiet moment. Size: Approximately 36 cm × 26 cm Artist Profile: Masao Ido (1945–2016) was a highly respected Japanese woodblock print artist known for his serene landscapes and detailed depictions of Kyoto’s traditional architecture. A leading figure in the modern shin-hanga movement, Ido studied under Koho and was influenced by artists like Kiyoshi Saito. His works often convey a sense of quietude, blending precise architectural forms with the subtle beauty of nature. Ido’s prints are widely collected both in Japan and internationally for their meditative quality and exquisite craftsmanship. **PLEASE NOTE** Shipping Information: Items are shipped from Japan.
