En 1842, il rejoignit Thomas Chapman pour fonder Hilliard & Chapman, coutelier et fabricant d'instruments chirurgicaux à Glasgow. En 1849, Harvey commença à travailler seul à l'enseigne The Star, au 60 Buchanan Street. Il mourut à l'âge de 77 ans,
