Amid Japan’s rapid economic growth and the broadening democratization of art, he debuted as an artist in 1968 at the age of thirty. Using silkscreen, photomechanical processes, and other advanced printing methods, he layered images that merged the illusions and realities of contemporary society. His innovative visual language quickly earned him recognition as a “child of the era,” leading to a series of awards in international competitions. At the same time, his experimental freedom challenged the norms of Japanese printmaking and provoked debates about the boundaries of the medium. After studying Nihonga at Kyoto City University of Arts, he worked in graphic design, later founding his own design company before turning fully to art. This atypical career path formed the basis of his unrestrained and inventive print expressions. The sensibilities of Nihonga and the structural clarity of advertising design informed his ordered compositions and multilayered imagery. Seeing printmaking not as a genre but as a medium, he explored diverse materials—including acrylic, stainless steel, glass, and enamel. As a professor and later president of Kyoto Institute of Technology, he pursued the fusion of science and art, while his continued social engagement earned him the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1999. 42*35cm 96g (C1471)
