A depicting of a ceremony during the Mifune Matsuri 三船祭 (Three Boats Festival), an annual festival in May that takes place in Kyoto's Arashiyama district where sensu fans of assorted colours are floated on the river Kamo. The story goes that long ago, when the Ashikaga Shogun visited the Tenryû temple near Arashiyama, a small boy that was with him in avertedly dropped his folding fan into the river, and the shogun was so moved by the beauty of the fan floating on the water, that thereafter everyone else too was impatient to see their own sensu float on the water. The vibrant polychrome paintings are set on a goldish silver leaf background. The panels are mounted by two brocade silk borders, a thin light one, and a broad dark brown one with a flower design. Framed by black lacquered wood fitted with protective hardware with a karakusa design Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century). Dimensions: Total width: 370.2 cm (2 x 62.9 cm, 4 x 61.1 cm); Height: 172.5 cm. Considering its age in a very good condition with some minor traces of wear consistent with age and old restorations.
