【Product details】
This striking woodblock print triptych depicts a dramatic naval engagement from the First Sino-Japanese War (1894–1895), focusing on the fierce battle near Haiyang Island and celebrating the decisive victory of the Imperial Japanese Navy over the Qing dynasty’s Beiyang Fleet.
Executed by Fuenken Tsuneshige, an artist active during the late 1880s and 1890s known for his bold war prints, this work vividly illustrates the chaos of naval combat. Explosions light up the scene as Japanese warships, proudly flying the Rising Sun flag, bombard and sink Qing vessels, which are shown ablaze, shattered, and capsizing in turbulent seas.
The composition captures the dynamism and intensity of modern warfare at sea, with impressive attention to detail: billowing smoke, erupting flames, cascading water, and sailors in action. The triptych conveys the patriotic fervour of the Meiji era and the technological superiority of Japan’s modern fleet.
Published in Meiji 27 (1894) by Inoue Mohei, the print reflects the public enthusiasm surrounding Japan’s military successes during this period. The title cartouche reads 海洋嶋附近二於激戦之大捷 (Great Victory at the Fierce Battle near Haiyang Island), underscoring the nationalistic tone of the image.
Condition: Minor foxing, small holes, some minor tears along the edges. Please refer to the photos for condition details.
This dramatic and highly dynamic triptych is a valuable historical artefact commemorating one of the key victories of the First Sino-Japanese War, and a fine example of Meiji-period sensō-e (war prints).
Dimensions of a print: approx. H 37 cm W 24.8 cm
