This Fukurokuju statue was created approximately 100 to 150 years ago, between the Meiji and Taisho periods. There is an inscription by the artist, but only two characters, "Man 万 saku 作," could be deciphered. Fukurokuju 福禄寿 is a deity originating from Chinese Taoism and one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. He is a deity endowed with the three virtues of "Fuku 福 (happiness and prosperous descendants)," "Roku 禄 (wealth and salary)," and "Ju 寿 (health and longevity)." He is characterized by his short stature, long head, long beard, and large earlobes. He is depicted as carrying a scroll tied to a staff and a crane, and is worshipped as a deity of virtue and good fortune. Benefits/Meanings Fuku 福: Prosperous descendants, safe childbirth, prosperity of the family, and general happiness. Roku 禄: Wealth, money, status, salary. Ju 寿: Health and longevity, long life (accompanied by health). Virtue and Popularity: Be admired by others and acquire virtue.
