【Product details】
This Meiji period or later hand-carved wooden sculpture depicts Acala, the central figure of the Five Wisdom Kings, seated before a flame-shaped halo, flanked by his two youthful attendants: Kongara Dōji on the left and Seitaka Dōji on the right. The group is arranged upon a rock-form base.
The surface is finished in vermilion lacquer and a paint mixture of gold powder and lacquer, while the reverse is coated in black lacquer. The dynamic flames of the halo, the fierce expression of Acala, and the flowing garments of the attendants are carved in detail, conveying both power and spiritual authority.
In Buddhist tradition, Acala is regarded as the wrathful manifestation of the Cosmic Buddha (Dainichi Nyorai). With sword in his right hand to cut through delusion and rope in his left hand to bind evil, he appears with fangs bared to subdue negative forces and guide all beings toward enlightenment. His attendants, Kongara Dōji and Seitaka Dōji, embody devotion and strength, serving as guardians by his side.
Condition: Kongara Dōji is missing both hands, and Seitaka Dōji is missing his right forearm. There are signs of wear consistent with age, including abrasions, soiling, discoloration, and areas of lacquer loss and cracking. The halo shows multiple blackened areas that appear burnt, with cracks around the insertion point. The base also has noticeable cracks that appear structural, running through the wood beneath the figures. Please refer to the photographs for further details.
Dimensions: approx. H 34.2 cm W 22.8 cm D 17.5 cm
