This mantra of owning multiple watches became a part of Rolex’s marketing language by the early 1960s, and it didn’t take long before the public’s buying perspective had shifted. The Rolex Cellini is a dedicated line of classic, luxury dress watches made exclusively from precious metals. Unlike most Rolex watches made for sports or diving, the Cellini ignores heavy-duty ruggedness to focus on sleek art and elegance. Rolex named it after Benvenuto Cellini, a famous 16th-century Italian sculptor and goldsmith. Rolex introduced the Cellini line in the late 1960s to offer a slim, dressy alternative to their famous chunky "tool" watches.The "King Midas": One of the first and most famous models was the King Midas, originally released in 1963. Designed by famous watchmaker Gérald Genta, it featured an angular case shaped like the Greek Parthenon. In 2014, Rolex completely modernized the Cellini line, making it much thicker and adding useful everyday features like date dials, dual time zones, and moon phases. Cellini was eventually phased out. Rolex later replaced this dress watch gap with the 1908 Perpetual collection.
