Rare Indo-Portuguese Palmwood Madonna – Goa, Late 16th / Early 17th Century
A beautifully carved devotional figure crafted in palm wood, attributed to an Indo-Portuguese workshop in Goa during the period of Portuguese missionary presence in India.
This Madonna stands in quiet grace, her head slightly inclined, draped in rich folds cascading with a rhythmic flow characteristic of Goan Catholic sculpture. The facial features and stylised hair reflect the fusion of European iconography and subtle South-Asian influences, making these sculptures highly prized in Christian colonial art.
Meant for private devotion, small palmwood figures such as this were treasured objects in both colonial households and mission settings, celebrating the spread of Christianity through the Estado da Índia.
