Working within the same subtractive method as “Laterite,” “Caligo” translates the removal technique into deep blue territory. The uniform blue foundation becomes the starting point for a process of strategic excavation, where VANTA has carved away paint to create flowing, interlocking forms.
Blue behaves differently than red under this treatment - it reads cooler, more contemplative, even when worked with the same aggressive removal techniques. Listed through S-Gallery on Catawiki, this piece shows how the same radical approach can yield completely different emotional results simply through color choice.
The smaller format intensifies the effect, making each carved pathway more intimate and immediate. “Caligo” draws you in for closer inspection of exactly how each groove and texture was achieved through the patient removal of paint.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
