Large Imari porcelain charger – Japan – 19th century Description A large 19th-century Japanese Imari porcelain charger, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamels, with additional green highlights. The central medallion depicts a flower basket surrounded by floral sprays, enclosed within radiating panels featuring baskets, bamboo and stylised floral motifs. The composition, colour palette and decorative balance are characteristic of Japanese Imari wares produced during the 19th century, particularly those intended for export markets. The use of bold cobalt-blue panels combined with iron-red enamels reflects a mature Imari aesthetic of this period, favouring strong visual contrast and decorative clarity. The charger has a lobed rim and an impressive diameter, making it a striking decorative piece. The reverse is decorated in underglaze blue with floral scrolls and double concentric rings to the foot, consistent with Japanese Imari export production. Condition: Good condition, consistent with age. There are two very fine hairline firing cracks visible under the glaze near the rim, caused by kiln-related stress during production. These cracks are stable, do not affect the structural integrity of the charger, and are commonly encountered on large Japanese Imari export pieces.
