Japanische Atelierkeramik-Teeschale (Chawan) – hochgebranntes Steingut mit Ascheglasur, signiertes - Steinzeug, Keramik - Japan - Shōwa Zeit (1926-1989)
This Japanese studio pottery tea bowl (chawan) is a hand-thrown stoneware piece dating to the mid–20th century, created for use in the Japanese tea ceremony.
The bowl features a softly rounded form with a gently flared rim, finished in a subdued natural ash glaze. The surface shows subtle tonal variations and brush-like iron markings beneath the glaze, resulting from traditional high-temperature kiln firing rather than surface decoration.
The interior glaze pools naturally, while the exterior reveals controlled movement and texture typical of Japanese studio and folk-influenced ceramics. The unglazed foot displays a coarse, iron-rich clay body with visible turning marks, consistent with authentic hand-crafted production.
The piece is accompanied by its original wooden storage box (tomobako), bearing Japanese calligraphy and a red seal. Such boxes traditionally identify the object and attest to its status as a valued studio work rather than a utilitarian vessel.
Although the bowl itself is unsigned, this is consistent with many Japanese studio potters working within the mingei tradition, where emphasis is placed on material quality, form, and firing over individual attribution.
A refined and authentic example of Japanese studio tea ceramics, suitable for collectors of chawan, tea ceremony utensils, and 20th-century Japanese pottery.
