Tafelaufsatz - Versilbertes Messing - Italienische Gala der Handwerkskunst

This exceptional salver, or elevated centerpiece, is a testament to Italian mastery of silversmithing during the interwar period, combining traditional craftsmanship with the finest electroplating techniques of the time. Historical and Artistic Classification -Origin: Italy. Manufactured for the luxury export market (During the golden age of Italian industrial metalwork, as this period was known, Italy produced high-quality export pieces for luxury hotels and ocean liners), following the standards of high-end European silversmithing. -Period: 1910-1930. A period piece that bridges the end of Art Nouveau and the resurgence of European Classicism. -Style: Italian Neo-Rococo. This is evident in the fluidity of its forms and the density of its perimeter ornamentation. -Material: Silver-plated brass. The brass base from this period is noticeably more durable than later productions. -Technique: Metal Electroplating (ME). Electrolytic coating of sterling silver, applied over a carefully chased base metal structure (MTL). -Mark: "ME. MTL" stamp on the center edge of the tray. This identifies the piece as Metal Electroplated on Metal, an internationally recognized mark of technical quality. -Ornamentation: Wavy rim with reliefs of grape berries, leaves, and scrolls. The cast feet stand out, featuring a complex design of acanthus leaves and organic forms typical of early 20th-century Italian foundries. -Condition: Excellent condition for its age. The silver plating retains exceptional brilliance and depth. There are two small dents in the plate (see yellow circle), consistent with a piece of approximately. 100 years of history, which lend it character and a patina of authenticity. -Attributions: A large-format collector's piece, ideal for head tables, period luxury hospitality settings, or as a decorative object of high historical value. The use of English initials (ME. MTL) on an Italian piece from this period indicates that it was conceived as a luxury item for the global market, maintaining the quality that made the goldsmithing of cities like Milan and Florence famous.
