A large (40,1 cm diameter) Chinese Swatow (Zhangzhou) blue and white 'Peacock' dish (platter, charger). China, Ming dynasty (1368-1644, 大明), Wanli period (1572-1620, 萬曆), late 16th c. Similar examples are preserved in Princesshof Museum in Netherlands (last pictures). Rare in this size and such good condition!
Painted to the interior in strong cobalt blue with two deers amongst a flowers, trees, rocks and grass. Walls with flower sprays alternating with flowering plants. Border with eight cartouches of floral sprays on fish-scale ground. The foot-rim and base with kiln grit, typical for the original Swatow ware.
UV- and day-light pictures included.
Dimensions: diameter – 40,1 cm; height – 7,7 cm. Weight – 2305 g.
Conditions report: excellent condition considering the item is over 450 years old! Small chips and fritting to the rim only. No cracks, no hairlines, no restorations. Typical for period firing faults. Use-related scratches to the glaze in places. Strong white-light tested. Check pictures for details.
