Pietro Andrea Gregorio Matthiolus (1501–1577) was a physician and naturalist born in Siena. He received his medical degree at the University of Padua in 1523 and later served as personal physician to Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria, and Emperor Maximilian II. A careful student of botany, he described around 100 new plant species. The work presents nearly 1,000 plants with woodcut illustrations, focusing on their identification and medical use. Originally published by Valgrisius (Vincenzo Valgrisi) in Venice in 1571. This edition is a limited facsimile reprint produced in a Budapest workshop in 1992. Bound in full leather with gilt decoration and metal clasps. Housed in a matching faux-leather clamshell box. Accompanying multilingual booklet (German, English, Hungarian, Czech, Slovak) with a foreword and two letters addressed to Matthiolus. Hand-numbered limited edition. This copy is number 19, a very low number within the edition. The original purchaser’s name is handwritten next to the numbering. Condition: Good. The leather case and the facsimile volume are in perfect condition.
