【Product details】
This elegant Showa period Oyama doll depicts a geisha captured mid-dance while holding a tsuzumi hand drum, a scene known as Tsuzumi no Mai (Drum Dance). Dressed in a vibrant red long-sleeved kimono, the figure conveys both grace and movement, reflecting the refined theatrical beauty associated with traditional Japanese dance.
The kimono is richly patterned with camellia and cherry blossoms. Camellia symbolises quiet strength and dignity, while cherry blossoms represent fleeting beauty and the transience of life. The bold red ground enhances these motifs, creating a striking visual contrast that was especially favoured in Showa-era doll making. The obi is crafted from black brocade woven with gold thread, featuring pine, bamboo, and cherry blossoms, a classic auspicious combination symbolising longevity, resilience, and renewal.
Her hairstyle is adorned with cascading wisteria hair ornaments. Wisteria has long been associated with elegance, refinement, and graceful continuity, echoing the flowing movement of the dance itself. The tsuzumi drum she holds is a traditional symbol of good fortune, as the word “naru” means both “to sound” and “to come to fruition,” making it a wish for success, fulfilment, and harmony in life.
The doll is securely mounted on a black lacquered wooden base, providing stability and a dignified presentation suitable for display.
The piece is in good vintage condition. There are minor signs of age such as light surface wear, light dust, and a faint stain on the drum. The colours of the costume remain vivid, and the facial expression is beautifully preserved. Please refer to the photos for details.
