Important Himalayan Buddhist shrine composed of a richly decorated torana (architectural niche), attributable to the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, in the Newari tradition.
The shrine houses a standing Bodhisattva Padmapani / Avalokiteshvara, holding a lotus, surrounded by multiple small seated Buddhas and attendant figures arranged in lateral niches and on the base. The lower register is decorated with protective animals and deities, typical of Nepalese Buddhist altar shrines.
The structure is finely worked with repoussé and dense filigree decoration, set with stone inlays including natural turquoise and colored stones, with some age-related losses consistent with long ritual use.
The shrine is made primarily of low ethnic silver
The surrounding frame and filigree elements are silver-colored and may be composed of a low-grade silver alloy, as traditionally used in Newari metalwork. No silver hallmark is present and no metal testing has been carried out.
The wooden back panel, painted in red pigment, is inscribed with hand-painted Tibetan mantras and fitted with small metal plaques, indicating a formal ritual consecration (rab gnas) and genuine religious use.
The central Bodhisattva figure is a later Nepalese addition from the 20th century, firmly fixed in place, likely replacing a lost original figure a common and accepted practice in Himalayan religious contexts.
The torana structure and surrounding figures are earlier, dating from the late 18th to 19th century.
