Altchinesisch- Tang-Dynastie Terracotta Ein großer galoppierender Hengst aus der Tang-Dynastie. - 39 cm

China, Tang dynasty (618–907) Earthenware with remains of original polychrome pigments Height: 39 cm Width: 48 cm This impressive and finely modelled Tang dynasty horse is shown in a dynamic prancing pose, with one foreleg raised and the head slightly lowered, conveying both controlled power and elegant movement. The robust body, arched neck, and confident stance reflect the Tang period’s celebrated mastery in the depiction of horses—symbols of imperial authority, military strength, and cosmopolitan culture. The horse is powerfully built, with a broad chest and muscular haunches, while the carefully shaped head features a pronounced muzzle and alert expression. The sculptural modelling emphasizes volume and rhythm, qualities characteristic of high-quality Tang equestrian figures. The raised foreleg and balanced posture give the figure a striking sense of animation and presence. Traces of the original polychrome decoration remain visible across the surface, including areas of red and black pigment used to accent the saddle cloth, harness details, and contours of the body. These surviving pigments enhance the sculptural depth and offer valuable insight into the original appearance of such figures when newly made. The surface shows natural wear, burial encrustation, and age-related abrasions consistent with genuine antiquity. The horse is mounted on an integral rectangular base, providing stability and reinforcing its intended role as a tomb figure, created to accompany and serve the deceased in the afterlife. At nearly half a meter in width, this is a large and visually commanding example, well above the size of more common Tang horses. Tang dynasty horses of this scale and quality are highly sought after for their strong aesthetic impact and their importance within the history of Chinese funerary art. This example would make a distinguished addition to any serious collection of early Chinese ceramics or Tang dynasty sculpture. -Premium Authenticity Guarantee – Becker Antiques (Established 1966) This is a high-value artwork, selected with the utmost care by Becker Antiques, a gallery founded in 1966 and based in a historic five-storey mansion in Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter.
