Ko-Sometsuke-Gericht - Porzellan - Landscape - China - Chongzhen (1620-1670)

Late Ming Blue and White Dish — Chongzhen Period (1620–1644) China, for the Japanese Market (Ko-Sometsuke) A finely painted blue and white porcelain dish dating from the Chongzhen period of the late Ming dynasty, produced specifically for the Japanese market, where such wares are known as Ko-Sometsuke (“Old Dyed Blue and White”). Dishes of this type were highly appreciated in Japan for use in the tea ceremony, valued for their expressive brushwork and rustic character. The barbed-rim dish is decorated in the centre with a moody mountain landscape beneath a bleak moon, featuring a solitary pagoda in the foreground. The scene is rendered in freely brushed underglaze blue, capturing the spontaneous and painterly aesthetic that distinguishes late Ming export porcelain. The base bears an apocryphal six-character Chenghua mark in underglaze blue, a common feature on transitional-period wares intended for export. Reference: See a similar decorated, but smaller, dish from the Butler collection object III.1.217 Dimensions: W 20 × H 3.3 cm Condition: Good overall condition. The rim shows eight short hairlines, one associated with a small chip; there is one additional chip and some minor rim frits. Small pieces of kiln grit are adhered in the centre and along the foot. All of these features are typical of late Ming wares and consistent with Ko-Sometsuke production. Please examine the images carefully. Small imperfections and kiln-firing flaws are not always described in detail. The written condition report is indicative only; the photographs provide the definitive and binding description of the item’s condition. Shipping: The dish will be securely packed and shipped with insurance. Stand not included.
