Pre-Columbian Veracruz Pottery Head – Remojadas
Gulf Coast, Mexico, ca. 200-600 AD
A large and expressive pottery head of a figure executed in the classic Remojadas style of the Veracruz culture.
The figure is depicted with a solemn, closed-mouth expression, with heavy-lidded almond-shaped eyes accentuated by black bitumen painting, still clearly visible.
The individual wears a wide headdress, also decorated with traces of black pigment, adding further character to the sculptural form.
This head likely once formed part of a larger figure, possibly a ceremonial effigy or funerary sculpture, characteristic of the artistry of the Gulf Coast of Mexico during this period.
The surviving polychrome surface, naturalistic modeling of the face, and stylistic details all highlight the refined craftsmanship of the Remojadas tradition.
Included is a custom black metal base.
Time period: Ca. 600 - 900 AD
Dimensions: 24 cm high incl. stand (18 cm high for head only)
Provenance: Dutch auction house.
