Historical background
The Samanids were one of the most important Iranian dynasties of the early Islamic world, ruling Transoxiana and Khurāsān while acknowledging nominal ʿAbbasid suzerainty. Their capital( AD 892 until the empire's end in AD 999) , Bukhārā, emerged as a major center of Persian culture, Sunni Islamic scholarship, and economic prosperity.
Nūḥ I ibn Naṣr ruled during a period of relative stability, though the wider Islamic world was experiencing increasing political fragmentation. By the mid-10th century, the ʿAbbasid caliphs in Baghdad had lost effective temporal power and were frequently deposed or restored by rival military factions. The appearance of the caliph al-Mustakfī bi-llāh on this dirham is historically significant: he reigned only briefly before being deposed and blinded in AD 946.
The continued inclusion of the caliph’s name on Samanid coinage underscores the dynasty’s claim to legitimacy as orthodox Sunni rulers acting in the name of the caliphate, even as real political authority lay firmly in regional hands. Coins such as this reflect the balance between de facto independence and symbolic loyalty that characterized Samanid rule at its height.
