WMF / Geislingen - Albin Müller - Flaschenuntersetzer - Messing, Versilbert - Art Nouveau

Beautiful silver-plated bottle / wine coaster. A stunning piece of „ Art Nouveau“ metal work that features a geometric repeat with gold decorations in relief. It also has a fine golden line on the lower edge. It was manufactured by WMF around 1905. The design was created by Albin Müller, a prominent designer from the Darmstadt artists' colony around (1871-1943). Made of Britannia metal, silver-plated with gold decorations in relief. It has the typical ostrich mark, which was only used between approximately 1903 and 1910. It also has the stamp 1/0, which was only used between 1880 and approximately 1920 and means 1g of silver per 1 qdm. The third stamp, OX, means that it was originally oxidised (artificially darkened to a darker grey), which unfortunately a previous owner did not notice or did not like and restored it to its original silver colour by cleaning it. There are still a few dark spots, but I have deliberately not cleaned them, as I believe the buyer should decide for themselves whether they want high-gloss silver and whether they prefer a matt or shiny finish. (Silver wool works great for this). It can also be re-oxidised using simple household remedies. This was done artificially to darken it, as these products were often combined with glass inserts in the past, and these harmonised better with the artificial darkening. There are also products from WMF that have AS instead of OX, which means that these products have also been oxidised, but to a much darker, almost black colour „antik Silver“. There is also a version of this model from WMF without the OX or AS stamp, and it is simply silver, so people may have thought that was normal when they googled it and cleaned it with silver cleaner, which, as mentioned, works well (I personally tried it on a small area with silver wool, but didn't want to do it completely). I also think it looks nice with the silver, especially since the golden raised areas are more visible there, and it will darken again over time anyway. It is slightly deformed at the bottom, but this is not noticeable when standing. It can certainly be bent back into shape at the bottom. It is also slightly deformed at the top of the opening, but this is hardly noticeable and can certainly be reshaped into a nice round shape with a little skill. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at that. Measurements: Hight: 7,5 cm Rim ⌀ : 9,5 cm Base ⌀ : 11 cm Please note, however, that this item is over 120 years old and naturally shows typical signs of age.
