Vitra - Charles Eames, Eero Saarinen - Sessel (2) - Organic Sessel - gemalt - Rotbrauner Leseecke

Charles and Ray Eames / Eero Saarinen Organic Chair, designed 1940 Produced by Vitra The Organic Chair is a landmark in 20th-century design history and one of the earliest examples of ergonomically shaped, organic seating. Designed in 1940 by Charles & Ray Eames in collaboration with Eero Saarinen, the chair was created for the “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition organized by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), which it famously won. The chair was revolutionary for its time, introducing a fully upholstered shell with flowing, sculptural lines that closely follow the human body. Its design marked a decisive break from rigid modernist seating and laid the foundation for postwar developments in organic modernism and ergonomic furniture design. Although conceived in 1940, the Organic Chair proved technologically difficult to mass-produce at the time and only entered serial production decades later. Vitra reintroduced the chair as part of its collection of design classics, faithfully reproducing the original proportions and comfort while meeting contemporary production standards. With its compact yet sculptural form, the Organic Chair functions equally well as a comfortable lounge chair and as an iconic design object. It is included in the collections of major museums worldwide and remains a highly sought-after piece among collectors of modern and postwar design. An essential and timeless design, representing the origins of organic modernism and the pioneering vision of Eames and Saarinen.
