Ottoman / Eastern European Silver Ring with Red Glass Cabochon – Late 18th–Early 19th Century
Description:
An impressive and authentic silver ring dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, originating from the Ottoman cultural sphere, most likely the Balkans or Anatolia. The ring is characterized by its substantial weight and bold proportions, reflecting traditional talismanic jewelry of the period.
The deep red glass cabochon is securely held in a hand-crafted scalloped bezel, bordered by a twisted silver wire collar. The shoulders are densely decorated with applied granulation, a labor-intensive technique widely employed in Ottoman and Balkan silverwork. Such rings were commonly worn as protective amulets, with red stones symbolizing vitality, strength, and protection against illness or misfortune.
The red glass displays attractive age-related surface wear and internal character consistent with period glass paste, producing a vivid glow when light passes through it.
