Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty was one of the more accomplished emperors after Emperor Taizu. Shenzong supported many reform initiatives, and particularly, the font used on Song Dynasty coins is very famous among all dynasties. The 'Xining Yuanbao' coins were all small-denomination copper coins, minted by the Song Dynasty to manage the northwestern frontier. Their weight was gradually reduced over time. The inscriptions were written in both regular script and seal script, mostly featuring plain reverse sides. The uniqueness of this Xining Yuanbao coin lies in its distinctive calligraphy style, featuring the rare large characters and, even more unusually, a blue-green patina, making it especially collectible as a beautiful and rare ancient coin. Emperor Renzong, on the other hand, was the longest-reigning emperor of the Song Dynasty. He is famous not least because of his convoluted ascension to the throne.
