Maritime Objekte (8) - Handgeblasene Glasfischernetze- Seltene Sammlung mit 2 Zylindern
A carefully curated set of 8 authentic Japanese hand-blown glass fishing floats, collected in northern Japan.
This particular set stands out for its exceptionally beautiful and well-balanced colour palette, making it a selection the seller is especially confident in.
The lot includes a combination of spherical floats and rare cylinder-type (rolling-pin style) floats, featuring soft and transparent sea-glass tones such as aqua, green, blue-green, and light amber—colours strongly evocative of the Japanese coastal waters.
This set includes floats bearing original Japanese markings, specifically a Kanji mark “川口” (Kawaguchi) and a Katakana mark “シ”, both clearly identifiable.
Such markings are important indicators of production background and regional use, and are highly valued by collectors as evidence of genuine working fishing floats.
These glass floats were traditionally used by Japanese fishermen from the early to mid-20th century, particularly along the northern coastal regions of Hokkaido and Tohoku.
Japan was among the earliest countries to adopt glass fishing floats, replacing wooden and cork floats in the early 1900s due to their superior durability and buoyancy.
Each float was individually mouth-blown by skilled craftsmen, resulting in natural bubbles, tool marks, subtle distortions, and gentle variations in form.
These characteristics clearly distinguish authentic working floats from modern decorative reproductions and contribute greatly to their charm.
