Gandharan Stucco Buddha – Symbol des Friedens und der Reflexion (Ohne mindestpreis)

Gandharan Stucco Buddha – Icon of Peace and Reflection Circa 3rd century AD This serene stucco Buddha sits cross-legged with both hands resting in the lap in meditation. The robe falls in soft U-shaped folds across the chest and knees, the face is calm with gently closed eyes and long earlobes, and the hair is gathered into a rounded topknot. Gandhara was an ancient cultural region in today’s northwest Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan. From about the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD, especially under the Kushan rulers, it became a major centre of Buddhism. Workshops there carved stone (often grey schist) and modelled stucco for monasteries and shrines. Gandharan art is known for blending South Asian subjects with Greco-Roman style. Dimensions: 20cm x 14cm x 4cm Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
