Qajar Period Brass Hookah Head (Sar-e Qalyan)
Mid to Late 19th Century (circa 1850–1890)
An authentic hookah head (Sar-e Qalyan) crafted during the Qajar period, mid to late 19th century. The body is made of brass and richly decorated with dense inlaid turquoise cabochons and small red glass beads, arranged in repeating geometric and stylized floral patterns characteristic of Qajar metalwork.
The exterior surface features finely chased and molded ornamentation, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with luxury smoking accessories of the period. The interior bowl is made of fired clay (earthenware), a traditional and functional material commonly used in original Qajar hookah heads due to its excellent heat resistance and suitability for tobacco use.
The surface displays a naturally developed patina consistent with age and long-term use. The piece remains structurally sound and fully functional.
Such hookah heads were both functional and decorative objects, reflecting the refined smoking culture of Qajar and the aesthetic preferences of the era.
