Miyamoto-Shoko Propeller Compass – Showa Period (Japan), with original box
Perfect vintage condition, ideal for navigation enthusiasts!
An original Japanese propeller-style compass produced by Miyamoto‑Shoko, a well-known Tokyo metalwork and silverware dealer/manufacturer, during the Showa period (1926–1989), a time marked by Japan’s rapid industrial, maritime, and aeronautical development.
This distinctive compass features a three-blade propeller form, crafted in metal with a naturally aged patina that reflects both use and time. At its center sits a finely made compass capsule with a traditional Japanese cardinal layout, protected beneath a clear lens. The blue steel needle remains well defined, indicating careful manufacture and quality materials.
The reverse hub bears Japanese kanji stamps, identifying the maker and attesting to authenticity. Accompanying the compass is its original wooden presentation box and a period Miyamoto-Shoko paper booklet, printed in both Japanese and English. The English text identifies the firm as:
“Expert Gold-Smiths and Silver-Smiths, Jewellers & Dealers in Objects of Art”
No. 1, 4-Chome, Ginza Nishi, Kyobashi, Tokyo.
This documentation strongly supports the compass’s provenance and positions it within Miyamoto-Shoko’s broader production of high-quality metalwork and precision objects.
Propeller compasses of this type are commonly associated with naval, aviation, or industrial desk use, serving both functional and symbolic purposes—representing direction, progress, and modern engineering. Today, they are highly sought after by collectors of Japanese Showa-era design, maritime instruments, and aviation memorabilia.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with little to no surface wear and oxidation. The piece was kept protected inside its original box. Compass needle present and visually intact. Original box and documentation included.
A rare and evocative artifact of early 20th-century Japan, combining functional precision with sculptural industrial design.
The sculpture will be shipped with secure protective packaging, full insurance, and tracking as I would do for myself.
Thank you for your time and happy treasure hunting!
