The mask was hand-carved from wood and finished using gofun, a traditional white pigment made from crushed seashells, giving the surface its soft, luminous tone. The Ko-omote mask represents a young maiden of approximately 16 to 17 years of age in Noh theatre. The facial expression is deliberately ambiguous, appearing gentle and smiling at one angle, yet subdued or sorrowful at another. When worn by a performer, even the slightest tilt of the head causes the expression to shift dramatically, creating a wide emotional range through movement alone. This subtle transformation is one of the defining aesthetic qualities of Noh masks. The blackened teeth (ohaguro) are a traditional feature and symbolise adulthood, reflecting historical beauty customs in Japan. The refined balance between innocence and maturity embodied in the Ko-omote mask has made it one of the most admired female mask types in the Noh repertoire. The interior of the mask bears the artist’s inscription, and the original wooden storage box is signed. A cord is attached. There is surface wear consistent with age, including small scratches, small chips, yellowing, and areas of paint loss. Overall fair to good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
