Gandhara Terracotta Büste eines Adligen – 1. bis 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr.

A Beautiful Gandhara Terracotta Bust of A Nobleman, 1st - 2nd Century AD H8.5 x W6 x D2.5 cm (H12.3 cm with Stand) This finely modelled terracotta bust depicts a male nobleman, characterised by a calm and dignified expression. The facial features are carefully proportioned, with a defined nose, subtly articulated eyes, and a sense of volumetric modelling that reflects the strong influence of Hellenistic-style sculpture. The treatment of the face demonstrates a naturalistic approach rooted in Greco-Roman artistic traditions, particularly in the emphasis on anatomical structure, balance, and three-dimensional form. These classical elements are skillfully integrated with local Gandharan sculptural conventions, resulting in a restrained yet expressive representation typical of the region during the early centuries of the Common Era. The surface retains the warm reddish tone of the terracotta body, with areas of encrustation, abrasion, and weathering consistent with age and long-term burial. The reverse is largely plain, indicating that the piece was likely intended for architectural, commemorative, or decorative display rather than as a fully freestanding sculpture. Gandhara, situated at the crossroads of South Asia and the Hellenistic world, developed a distinctive artistic language through the synthesis of Greek, Roman, and local traditions. This bust stands as a compelling example of that cultural exchange, illustrating how classical sculptural ideals were adapted within a regional context. Provenance: Acquired from a private collection in 1982, Paris Condition: Overall in good condition. Some abrasion caused by age. Overall surface is covered with soil. No restoration. Shipping worldwide, usually 14-21 days to deliver. The photo of proof of origin and certificate of authenticity will be provided via email.
