Nanking cargo plate, Imari landscape pattern –China- Qianlong period 1752
On offer is a fine Chinese Export porcelain plate from the Nanking Cargo, decorated in Imari palette with a ‘flowers in fenced garden’ pattern. The colors now degenerated into grey tones, with traces of iron red & gilt details, due to immersion of the salty sea water, during their > 230 years stay in the water! An excellent condition example from the Nanking cargo ship wreck site, auctioned in April-May 1986 by Christie’s. The plate has its original auction sticker. Provenance: The Nanking Cargo sale, Christie's Amsterdam, 28 April - 2 May 1986. >10 years in a private collection.
About the Nanking cargo: On Monday January 3, 1752, the Dutch East India Company ship Geldermalsen, struck a reef on her return journey to the Netherlands and sank in the South China Sea. The Geldermalsen had a cargo consisting of tea, raw silk, textiles, dried wares, groceries, lacquer and porcelain. The found Chinese porcelain was originally potted in Jingdezhen, Jiangzi province and then shipped to Nanking for delivery to the Geldermalsen for final transportation to the Netherlands. The cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and his team in 1985 and sold by Christie's Amsterdam on 28 April - 2 May 1985 as 'The Nanking Cargo.

Size: This plate measures ca. 23 cm across.
Condition: As found condition; Excellent with no damages. Partly dull decoration due to >230 years immersion of the salty sea water. Original Christie’s sticker lot-nr. 4165.
