Black jade is actually very dark nephrite jade, and it was highly prized in ancient China as a symbol of status and protection. This type of stone was valued for its hardness and durability, often used for ritual and symbolic objects.
The overall decor is made of scrolls—a style common in steppe animal art and ancient Chinese traditions.
During the Tang dynasty, jade belt plates carved with musicians, dancers, and mythical animals were common and indicated the wearer's high status. Jade belt plates from this period are renowned for their detailed high-relief work and the use of dynamic animal and human motifs, such as those seen on this plaque.
