Chartreuse Yellow

Created in 1840, this yellow liqueur was inspired by the original recipe of the Élixir Végétal. Its exceptional success led Father Garnier — then Procurator and Head of Liqueurs — to officially name it Chartreuse Jaune and register the “Chartreuse” trademark in 1852.

At 43% ABV, Chartreuse Yellow is still crafted today by the Carthusian Fathers, following the same tradition and secrecy that have made it a timeless icon. Its delicate balance of herbs, spices, and natural plants offers a smooth, refined taste that embodies centuries of expertise and devotion.

Elaboration

Chartreuse Yellow is distinguished by its smoothness, spicy aromas, and natural color — derived from 130 plants, flowers, barks, roots, and spices.

Its production process differs from that of Chartreuse Green and requires several weeks of meticulous work through multiple stages:
• The monks at the Grande Chartreuse Monastery carefully prepare the plant mixtures in the “herb room.”
• Distillation follows, to capture the essence and aroma.
• Various macerations are then performed to extract the active components of the plants, giving the liqueur its natural color and aromatic depth.

The liqueur is aged for a long period in large oak casks, where it develops its distinctive harmony and complexity. Once bottled, it continues to evolve gracefully over time.

Tasting Notes
An intense yellow hue with a fresh, spicy nose.
A smooth, velvety texture.
Flavors of turmeric, citrus, and anise.
Delicate floral notes extend the tasting experience with finesse.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoyed as a digestif to fully appreciate its rich flavors and aromatic strength. Serve ideally chilled, between 12°C and 13°C, or over ice.
Since the 19th century, it has also been a refined cocktail ingredient, adding subtlety and gentle sweetness to any creation.
