Altes Ägypten, Spätzeit Blue Faience Skarabäus mit Hieroglyphen
A fine Ancient Egyptian blue-glazed faience scarab amulet. The obverse is incised with anatomical details, including two eyes and the head, as well as a smooth domed body. The flat base is inscribed with crude hieroglyphic motifs, worn due to age. The top hieroglyph might either be a boat or a barge hieroglyph or a sun disc framed by two stylised uraei. The large hieroglyph at the bottom could represent a vulture (mwt). Some pitting, dark earthly encrustations and general wear to the surface, consistent with age. Chipping around the edges of the scarab. Particular wear to the lower right edge of the reverse. The amulet has been perforated longitudinally for suspension, however it is now blocked.
The scarab was one of the most popular ancient Egyptian amulets, used as pieces of jewellery, commemorative items and seals, and magical amulets offering protection and good fortune. The scarab was thought to represent the sun god Ra. As the sun travels across the sky from day to night, the ancient Egyptians believed that the scarab beetle rolling its ball of dung across the desert mirrored this. This scarab comprises an engraving of the hieroglyph of the feather of Maat, the Ancient Egyptian goddess of truth and justice whose feather was balanced against the heart on the scale during the ceremony of the weighing of the heart in the underworld.
Measurements: L 1.9cm x W 1.4cm x H 0.9cm
