Luís Gomes (Padre Luís Gomes) - Sermam di Navidade - 1698
Rare Portuguese sermon printed in Lisbon in 1698, preached for the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and dedicated to Luís de Sousa, Archbishop of Lisbon and newly created Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church.
This publication belongs to the highly fragile category of 17th-century occasional religious pamphlets, issued for immediate ceremonial use and never intended for long-term conservation. Such sermons were typically distributed shortly after their delivery and subsequently discarded, which explains the extremely low survival rate of complete examples. As a result, intact copies from this period are today seldom encountered on the antiquarian market.
The text was delivered by Padre Luís Gomes, theologian and official preacher of the Archdiocese of Lisbon, and printed by Antonio Pedrozo Galram, an active Lisbon printer in the final decades of the 17th century. The imprint is a fine representative example of Portuguese Baroque printing: clear typographic composition, sober layout, and paper of good original quality, entirely consistent with ecclesiastical production of the period.
The present copy is complete, comprising 16 pages, and is preserved in a later protective paper wrapper. This type of later brossura is historically appropriate and frequently encountered on surviving pamphlets of this nature, originally issued without a true binding. The interior shows light and evenly distributed traces of old humidity, fully consistent with age and storage history, without affecting the readability, cohesion, or stability of the paper. The text remains clear and well impressed throughout.
Comparable sermons of the same period and typology are documented in major institutional holdings, including the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, and are recorded in international bibliographic databases such as WorldCat, confirming both the bibliographic legitimacy and the historical significance of this imprint.
A genuine and evocative witness to late 17th-century Marian devotion and Portuguese ecclesiastical culture, offered here in complete and sound condition. An appealing opportunity for collectors of early printed books, religious history, and Iberian Baroque ephemera.
