The surface shows confident knife work, with carefully shaped fins and a lively face, giving the piece a strong presence despite its simple subject. The work was created by Yukio Nagasawa (長澤幸夫), who studied under Masahiro Sawada (澤田政廣). Sawada was a major Showa-era sculptor and recipient of the Order of Culture, having trained under Yamamoto Zuiun, one of the leading pupils of the celebrated sculptor Takamura Koun. This background adds depth and collectability to Nagasawa’s work. The sculpture is signed on the base, and it makes an eye-catching decorative piece for a display shelf, Japanese interior setting, or a collection of modern Japanese folk-inspired carving.
