Tisch - Walnuss - Werkbank des Handwerkers

19th Century Craftsman’s Work Table with Slate Top – Solid Oak & Walnut – ca. 1880–1900 A rare and characterful 19th-century craftsman’s work table, dating from circa 1880–1900, originating from Southern Germany / Tyrol region. This authentic piece reflects traditional Central European workshop furniture, combining robust construction with refined artisanal details. The table features a solid oak structure with a walnut border framing a central natural black slate inlay. Slate was highly valued in artisan workshops for its perfectly flat, durable surface, making it ideal for precision handwork such as fine carpentry, instrument making, or jewellery work. The top is reinforced with two large wooden butterfly joints (bowties), a classic 19th-century technique used to stabilize solid wood and prevent cracking. Decorative carved star motifs enrich the walnut border, adding a distinctive Alpine folk character. The table stands on four individually hand-carved legs, each slightly different, underlining its fully handcrafted nature. A single front drawer with its original wooden knob offers practical storage and showcases hand-cut dovetail joints and wooden pegs, clear indicators of pre-industrial joinery methods. The slate surface displays honest, age-appropriate wear, including scratches and marks that testify to its original workshop use. The wood retains a beautiful, warm patina, highly sought after by collectors and interior designers. Condition • Original, unrestored condition • Attractive aged patina consistent with age • Surface wear and marks from historic use • Inactive wormholes typical for 19th-century furniture • Structurally solid and stable • Suitable for decorative display or light functional use • Can be gently cleaned and waxed to enhance the finish Materials • Solid oak • Walnut (border and decorative elements) • Natural slate Dimensions (approx.) • Height: 75 cm • Diameter / Width / Depth: 110 cm • Drawer depth: 10 cm Period Late 19th century – circa 1880–1900 Origin Southern Germany / Tyrol region
