This striking black-and-white woodblock print, Yokohama from Munakata’s Noshi Kumo no Saku (熨斗結雲の柵) series, is an original work by the renowned Japanese printmaker Shiko Munakata (棟方志功), created in 1957. It was officially published in February 1992 by Yaskawa Electric Corporation (株式会社安川電機) in Japan.
The composition centers on Yokohama Port, featuring boats, buildings and a tower as the core elements. Munakata employs highly expressive black-and-white blocks and dynamic lines to convey the bustling vitality and powerful atmosphere of the port. Executed in his signature "Munakata-style (棟流)" carving technique, the work boasts bold, forceful lines and simplified forms, brimming with artistic tension that fuses primal power with modern aesthetics.
The bottom of the print bears the artist’s pencil signature, the limited-edition number 3/10, and a red seal.
The reverse side of the print is printed with the inscriptions: 1992 Tōkaidō Munakata Hangashi, February Yokohama, Noshi Kumo no Saku, Yaskawa Electric Corporation (1992 年「東海道棟方版画」2 月 横浜 熨斗結雲の柵 株式会社安川電機)
Due to age-related natural oxidation, the print paper shows minor signs of aging including slight yellowing and creases, while the overall condition remains in good state.

Shikō Munakata was originally named Kumao Munakata. He enrolled in the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts but later dropped out due to financial constraints. In 1927, he dedicated himself fully to printmaking. Influenced initially by traditional Japanese ukiyo-e (浮世絵) and Western Expressionism, he developed a distinctive style characterized by dramatic black-and-white contrasts and bold, concise lines, with subject matter encompassing folk tales and mythology. His career gained momentum in 1936 when his works were selected for the First Independent Art Association Exhibition. In 1955, he was designated a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government—a prestigious official title for bearers of Japan’s intangible cultural heritage. His artworks have been exhibited extensively both domestically and internationally, playing a pivotal role in introducing Japanese printmaking to the global stage. His artistic legacy continues to inspire countless printmakers to this day.
